It is said that about 97% of all water on the earth is sea water and about 3% is fresh water. Only 0.8% of all water is usable from rivers or underground sources.

Converting sea water to portable water by desalination has been attempted for a long time. The total capacity of world sea water desalination facilities available at present is in excess of 10 million m3/day.
